Slurry Wall Construction And Its Importance

Construction of slurry walls is preferred in areas of poor drainage next page, soft soil and where there are no other options. It’s especially helpful when the construction site has open water or is close to the water table. A perimeter of slurry-walls is usually constructed to exclude any water or soft earth from entering the building site. Construction of Slurrywalls

Theoretically, constructing a slurry-wall is easy. However, it can be a challenging process. To start, a trench needs to be excavated. When the material is removed it is replaced with an aEoeslurryaE or concoction that is relatively thick. This slurry may be pumped mechanically, and it has the added advantage of being a little more dense that water or non compacted earth, but a bit less dense as finished concrete. It is used during excavation to keep the earth back and hold off water until a separate pump can substitute it with a marine cement that will cure underwater.

The wall specifications generally call for an emulsion wall one to two inches thick. Two steel, hydraulic guide walls separated by this distance, are driven in the ground. An excavator then removes the materials inside. The slurry can then be added. The process continues by driving the guide walls further into the ground. When the guide wall and the slurry have reached the proper depth, an additional pump hose is added and a rebar reinforcing framework is installed. The frame is enclosed by a cement-mixture pumped through a hose. The cement mixture is pumped through the hose from the bottom. It displaces any slurry that is present and can be recycled. The entire perimeter of a construction site is covered by the process.

Often, the builders of these iconic structures are asked to construct them under very difficult conditions.
