US automakers as well the US Government are working on new technologies to enable future vehicles to communicate both with one another and objects in their environment. V2V uses wireless signals for communication with surrounding vehicles and sharing information such as direction, speed, or location. Engineers at MIT work on V2V algorithims to calculate information about vehicles and analyze it to determine what the best option is if a roadblock appears. National Highway Traffic Safety Administrationsuggests a significant 79% reduction in vehicle crashes through V2V technology. Researchers are also experimenting with V2I. V2I is a technology that allows cars and road objects to communicate, like traffic lights, road signs, etc. in order to control vehicle issues. V2I could pull data from a system of traffic management to determine the best route. NHTSA states that the integration between V2V and V2I will result in a reduction of road traffic accidents from 81%.

2. Autonomous Cars

While the idea of autonomous cars has existed for some time and was introduced to us by TV Shows, movies, and other media, nobody thought it would ever become a realistic possibility. Volkswagen, Ford, Audi and others have tested self-driving car technology for years. Ford has tested an automated car in Arizona while Tesla promises fully autonomous cars by the end of this year. Autonomous car are capable to recording road images as well as finding alternative roads and traffic lights using advanced radars. GM has tested autonomous cars independently, despite how farfetched the concept seems. The company plans to have an autonomous vehicle available by 2020. Uber has also been working on developing autonomous technologies and is currently testing them in Pittsburgh.

Airbags usually are in the front part of the vehicle. But automakers, who care about safety, also use side airbags. Also, they have seatbelt, curtain, and even knee airbags. The airbags would be an active safety feature, with sensors to measure the collision impact. These airbags use a friction-coating feature that will double their chances of stopping the vehicle. This will increase bumper to bumper touching and keep passengers from slipping down in the event of an accident. Airbags can be developed based on current safety features of vehicles. Other than that, automakers work on external airbagsto cushion the impact to passengers inside the vehicle. Volvo showed us how it equipped the V40 with an airbag for pedestrians to be protected in a crash. Another promising future technology is the semi-autonomous system, which uses systems like lane stay assist. Light Detection & Ranging System (LiDAR), a new technology, allows cars to observe the world in real-time.

4. Energy Efficient Body Panel

Car designers are trying to find a way to integrate energy-efficient polymer and carbon body panels to get rid of the Hybrid battery blemishes in current autos. These boards Panels are light-weight and can be adapted to enhance the speed of automobiles without compromising quality.
